Traditionally an agricultural village, it is still
bounded by farm managed open countryside although to
the South there are unspoilt marshes which encompass
Holland Brook and provide a natural relief as the land
falls away towards the sea. The housing is uncluttered
and mostly of family style and cottages which are scattered
off the main road through the village, although most
of the older properties are situated close to the medieval
church and the two olde worlde public houses, which
along with the church were known for their past links
with smuggling. There is one general store in the village
but access is available by road to Frinton-on-Sea and
Clacton-on-Sea.
